The Sanjeev Sinha Foundation is proud to unveil Buoyant Iconic Depth, a transformative exhibition honoring the legacy of the celebrated artist Sanjeev Sinha. The exhibition will be held at the Visual Arts Gallery, India Habitat Centre, from November 20th to 26th, 2024.
Curated by Els Reijnders (Director Foundation for Indian Artist) and Dianne Hagen (Visual artist from the Netherlands), this exhibition is supported by The Raza Foundation, Takshila, and Mediverse Hospital. Together, they have crafted an immersive experience that delves into Sinha’s profound explorations of beauty, spirituality, and the human condition through his distinctive blend of bold, colorful paintings and intricately symbolic sculptures.
Sinha’s works invite viewers to explore the mysteries of society and the pursuit of peace, themes infused with his deep-rooted connection to Indian culture and mythology. Like the title itself, Buoyant Iconic Depth, these pieces encourage reflection, inviting viewers to dive beneath the surface to uncover the hidden layers in each creation. Willem Baars, renowned art historian and gallerist, praised Sinha’s ability to create imagery that is immediately relatable yet mysteriously elusive, describing his work as “layered, demanding attention, leaving you suspended in thought.”
This exhibition highlights the unveiling of many of Sinha’s works that have remained unseen until now. His iconic sculptures—already celebrated in Amsterdam—will also be featured, fulfilling Sinha’s vision to present his paintings and sculptures in dialogue, revealing their intertwined nature and mutual resonance.
Reflecting on Sinha’s early works, independent art critic and curator Meera Menezes commented, “His art was his language, crafting a visual vocabulary that transcends time and space, inviting viewers into a world of introspection.” Menezes underscores Sinha’s capacity to evoke timelessness, which speaks to a universal human experience beyond cultural boundaries, “It was this need that translated into his desire to create a visual vocabulary that generated a feeling of transcendence and timelessness.”
Describing Sinha’s unique approach to art, Willem Baars, art historian and gallerist, remarked, “He could create images you had never seen before but could relate to in some way, yet they might also make you feel uncomfortable or leave you floating somewhere. His images were something you could never instantly read. There’s some kind of layering in his work that demands attention.”
Alongside the exhibition, the Sanjeev Sinha Foundation will launch an exclusive full-color catalog, a must-have for art lovers and collectors. With thoughtful essays by Reijnders, Hagen, Menezes, and Baars, this catalog provides a thorough exploration of Sinha’s artistic legacy, capturing the evolution of his work and the powerful themes that shape his creations.
About Sanjeev Sinha Born in 1963 in Barh, Bihar, Sanjeev Sinha was a pivotal figure in the emerging Bihari art generation of the 1980s. Graduating from the College of Arts & Crafts, Patna, Sinha’s journey took him across India, from Lucknow to his permanent residence in Delhi. His work, deeply rooted in Hindu and Buddhist mythologies, explores themes of society, peace, and beauty, always with a reflection on the intrinsic role of art in society. His artistic contributions have been recognized worldwide, including winning the National Academy Award in 1991 at the young age of 28.
Sinha’s eclectic body of work is notable for its diversity in style and medium. From his early contemplative paintings depicting silence amidst a world in turmoil to his later vivid works such as the Gentle Bite series of 2013, Sinha deftly shifted between stylistic approaches and composition methods, often juxtaposing mythological figures with modern symbols. His sculptures, intimate yet monumental, play with scale and symbolism, inviting the viewer into a world of personal reflection and cultural depth.
