Enjoy your next winter weekend watching the sunset over the placid waters of a huge lake dotted with lush green hills. This is Baranti (or Boronti), a weekend getaway in Purulia district. It is an ideal place to enjoy the winter chills amidst the amazing natural beauty.
Muradi located on the Adra-Asansol rail line is the nearest station to reach Baranti. However, it is best to arrange vehicles from Adra or Asansol. As one approaches Baranti past several rugged hills, a blue line in the distant horizon slowly turns out to a huge lake, the Baranti Reservoir. It is a man-made lake formed by an embankment. Drive along the curved embankment to reach the village of Baranti.

Tourists taking the early morning train will reach Baranti by late afternoon. After checking in at one of the numerous resorts and a wholesome meal that should include aloo posto, it is time to explore the sleepy hamlet. Evening is the perfect time to stroll along the embankment of the lake. Sunsets are spectacular as the fiery ball dips into the western shores of the lake, streaking the water and sky with a riot of colours.
The nights are no less spectacular with the star studded sky above your head with the Milky Way stretching all across the sky. Occasional meteorite, shoots through the entire length of the sky giving ample time to complete the wish.

The next morning starts early with a village walk. It is an aimless walk along the trails meandering past mud houses with children playing around. Bullock carts make their way through the village and the farmers are busy with their agricultural activities.
Joychandi hill is a popular tourist attraction in Purulia district
The towering rocky cliffs of the Joychandi hill can be explored on the second half of Day-II. The bare rock formation towering above the lush green vegetation has been immortalised by Satyajit Ray in his legendary movie Gupi Gayen Bagha Bayen. It was at the base of these towering rocks that Gupi and Bhaga had their fast bhooter raja’s grand feast.

Today a temple stands atop the hill, which is approached by a stairway of 480 steps. The top provides a spectacular bird’s eye view of the surroundings and if you are lucky you can spot the train running along the Adra-Asansol line.

On the way up the hill is a ruined tower, which was part of an early 19th century communication system known as semaphore. Popularly known as visual telegraph or optical telegraph, was a most popular communication technology in the pre-telegram days. Nothing much remains of the tower but it does remind us about the amazing communication system.
Finally, it is time to head back to Baranti and if you are short of time take the night train back to Kolkata from Adra but for the more leisurely traveller, it is best to spend the second night in Baranti and take the morning train from Asansol.

Getting there: Adra and Asansol are the most preferred railheads. Cars to Baranti (Boronti) can be arranged from the resort.
Places to stay and eat: Baranti has several resorts with rooms and cottages. The resort serves basic but excellent food. Do not miss having aloo posto.
Getting around: The village of Baranti and surrounding areas is best explored on foot. For going to Joychandi Hill, a car is necessary. Resorts can arrange the car.
