If you are a regular at Kolkata’s night clubs, chances are you have crossed paths with Roxanne Peterson. If you are friends with her, you will be greeted with a, “Hi love, how are you?” followed by a warm hug. A seasoned nightlife manager, Roxanne has been part of Kolkata’s nightlife industry — in total boss-woman style — for 15 years. Currently managing Phoenix at The Astor on Theatre Road, she previously helmed Roxy at The Park for many years.
Roxanne's journey began with clicking and uploading pictures on Facebook, which helped her get recognised. She has since become a pivotal figure in the nightlife scene, known for her dedication and expertise.
My Kolkata speaks to this powerhouse of a woman who has seen generations of revellers party happily in the city. Edited excerpts follow…
My Kolkata: One and a half decades in the nightlife industry. How does it feel to have come this far?
Roxanne Peterson: Time has passed in the most amazing way. I grew up with the whole city by my side. I still feel the same excitement on my way to work every day. I am so lucky to be here.
What was your stepping stone?
It started in 2009, when I took and edited photos of people at Venom, posting them on Facebook. People began recognising and following me, and I realised they enjoyed partying with me. I loved the club, the music, the dancing, and the energy.

With fewer women in the nightlife industry back then, did you challenge norms or adjust to succeed?
There weren’t many women in this industry back then, and I had to create a role for myself. It’s still a challenge, however, I have learnt to groove through them and stay true to what I love — why I’m still here.
With your experience and current role at Phoenix, what measures do you take to ensure the club runs smoothly every night?
Phoenix is such a niche establishment. We believe in having quality experiences every night. We have an incredible team that knows when to shift gears. It’s a tough job but with preparation, we manage to pull off epic nights.
You have witnessed the evolution of Kolkata’s nightlife. What are some notable changes you have seen over the years?
I try not to compare the past with now because the world keeps changing and it’s so important to accept that and move forward with the community. The best thing I see now, however, is that people are way more accepting of different genres of music. That keeps nightlife alive and makes things more interesting.
You’ve worked hard to reach where you are and now you have a core group with your husband DJ Rishi and friend Rudra. Tell us about the RRR trio!
Working with Rishi and Rudra has greatly shaped my career. Together, we are resourceful and resilient, supporting each other as part of the incredible Phoenix crew. Rishi, my husband, is the hardest-working person I know, and I learn from him daily. We are always in sync with music and life, and having a son together is like a symphony of who we are.

Who are some local acts whose journey you have followed?
I have been following 8-Bit Culprit, Vikrant and Devaa for years, and I am so proud of them.
Any advice for people wanting to follow in your footsteps?
Embrace your community and your city. Stay happy, keep your energy up, and wear comfy shoes.
