The First Anglo-Burmese War started on this day and continued till February 24, 1826. It was the first of the three wars that were fought between the British and the Burmese empires in the 19th century.
The first war was fought mainly over the control of the territory that is now north-east India. In 1823, Burmese forces crossed into Bengal. The British retaliated. In 1825 the British Indian forces progressed northward.
The Burmese general Bandula was killed and his armies vanquished. The Treaty of Yandabo in February 1826 ended the First Anglo-Burmese War, with a decisive victory for the British. It gave them control over north-eastern India, Arakan province and Tenasserim.
The war remained one of the most expensive wars fought by the British in India.
