On this day, the main report in Amrita Bazar Patrika, published from Calcutta, was titled “Why Communist Party has been banned”. The party had been banned by the Bengal government.

The report quoted from the government statement:

“….Acute shortage of food and clothing, and the difficult task of rehabilitating refugees from East Bengal are some of the urgent problems which have (been) fully engaging the attention of the government. The C.P.I. has not been slow to take advantage of the government’s preoccupation by stirring up lawlessness and disorder wherever possible for its own purposes. Following the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, the C.P.I. started vigorous propaganda trying to rouse passions against some of the leaders of the nation…”
