The battle of Wandiwash (now Vandavasi in Tamil Nadu) was fought on this day between the British, under Sir Eyre Coote, and the French, under the comte de Lally. It was the final battle in the confrontations between the British and the French in southern India during the Seven Years’ War (1756–63). The British victory established the dominance of the British East India Company over southern India.
Lally was weakened by the withdrawal of a fleet and the lack of money as well as unity among his soldiers. When he tried to reviver the fort of Wandiwash (near Pondicherry), Coote attacked him. The French were restricted to Pondicherry. Lally was imprisoned and killed.
