On this day the Calcutta Trades Association, which would assume the name Calcutta Chamber of Commerce in 1977, acquired the status of a corporate body, immediately following the incorporation of the Indian Companies Act, 1882.

The association had been established in 1830. Its website claims it is the oldest chamber of commerce in not only India, but also Asia.

At a meeting on July 5, 1830, 200 tradesmen of Kolkata and adjoining areas had gathered at 9am at the Exchange Rooms of Mckenzie, Lyall & Co., at 14, Tank Square, and a resolution was adopted to form an association of tradesman called Calcutta Trades Association, with Samuel Smith of Samuel Smith & Co. as its first President.
