This was the concluding day of the first meeting of the Indian Science Congress Association, held in the city. The meeting had started on January 15.

The association had originated when two British chemists, J.L. Simonsen and P.S. MacMahon felt that scientific research in India would be facilitated by an annual meeting of researchers, held along the lines of the British Association for the Advancement of Science.

The first meeting was held at the Asiatic Society, Kolkata, with Asutosh Mukherjee, then vice-chancellor of Calcutta University, as president. According to the website of the association, 105 scientists from different parts of India and abroad attended the meeting and the 35 papers presented were divided into six sections: Botany, Chemistry, Ethnography, Geology, Physics and Zoology, under six section presidents.
