The first Bengali talkie, Jamai Shashthi, was released on this day.
The film was directed by Amar Chowdhury, produced by Madan Theatre Limited and released at Crown.
It was released a month after Alam Ara, considered the first Indian talkie. The cast included Chowdhury, Jatin Singha, Kshirodegopal Mukherjee (also the music director), Miss Golela, Ranisundari, Bimal Gupta, Kartik Ray and Bholanath.
Chowdhury had directed several films in the silent era, and continued to make talkies.
Jamai Shashthi was a short film. The first full-length feature talkie was Dena Paona. It was released in December 1931.
Based on Saratchandra Chattopadhyay’s novel, it was produced by New Theatres and directed by Premankur Atarthy.
