The city was consistently cloudy and breezy on Monday and it rained occasionally.

The rain was negligible but the overcast conditions dragged the Celcius down significantly.

The Met office recorded a maximum temperature of 30.8 degrees in Alipore on Sunday. It was five degrees lower than what is usual for this time of the year.

The high moisture content in the air makes the conditions uncomfortable when coupled with soaring temperatures. But not on Monday.

The mercury plunged because the clouds shielded the sun for a better part of the day and the weather was pleasant.

The Met office had issued an “enhanced thunderstorm” alert for West Bengal till May 3.

Kolkata was likely to get rain, accompanied by streaks of lightning and gusts of wind. So far, significant rain has eluded the city.

The Met office recorded less than 5mm of rain in Alipore on Monday.

Showers were not ruled out for Tuesday and the day after.

“An upper-air trough extends from Vidarbha to Karnataka. It is too far from Bengal to have a formidable impact like heavy rain and very strong winds. But the trough is expected to come closer to Bengal over the next two days. Under its influence, thunderstorms are expected in Kolkata on Tuesday and Wednesday,” said G.K. Das, director, IMD, Kolkata. The clouds that came Kolkata’s way on Monday formed near the trough and came via Chhattisgarh, he said.
