According to the officer, Mondal had paid them Rs 2.5 lakh after he was assured of a job in the state health department.

The three, the officer, said are part of a gang that sends out bulk SMSes and WhatsApp messages where jobs in various government departments are advertised.

“Once a person replied and showed interest they would call them to places near government offices in Salt Lake and pose as government officials. They would then take money from them and promise to get them placed in some government department or the other,” the officer added. Once they got the money the three would sever all communication with the person.

“Mondal too had paid them Rs 2.5 lakh and then they stopped all forms of communication with him and had switched off the number that they had given him,” the officer said.

The cops have questioned the trio and have found that they are a part of a racket.

Many others have been cheated in this manner with the promise of jobs.

“We are looking for the other members of the gang. We have also started a probe to find out where they were sourcing the phone numbers from where they would send bulk messages,” said the officer.
