Following a complaint by the officials of the private bank at Salt Lake cyber crime police station earlier this month, a senior officer of the Bidhannagar Commissionerate said.

According to the officer, several young job-seekers landed at different branches of the bank. They had told the bank officials that they had been contacted by men who claimed that they had “reviewed and selected” their profiles from a job site on the Internet.

“After getting the complaint we started an investigation and tracked down
three men,” said the police officer.

The men are part of a bigger racket whose members used to log into online job portals and create accounts by posing as human resource officials of different firms, the officer said.

“They would then contact the job aspirant by getting their contact details from the job portals. They would ask them to pay money on the pretext of a variety of charges. To win over the confidence of the young job aspirants they would also send in fake appointment letters to them,” he said.

The three, the officer, said are part of a gang that also sends out bulk text messages and WhatsApp messages where different jobs are advertised.

Many youngsters have been cheated in this manner with the promise of jobs.

“We are looking for the other members of the gang. We have also started a probe to find out from where they were sourcing the SIM cards data,” said the officer.

The police are looking for the other members of the racket and have seized several cellphones, a number of SIM cards and documents related to bank accounts from the three.
