Ten people have been arrested for allegedly running a fraudulent call centre in a building in New Town’s Action Area-III and duping people of lakhs by posing as representatives of a telecom industry looking for places to set up telecom towers.
The state CID arrested the 10 from an office on the fourth floor of the Eco Suit building in Action Area-III on Tuesday night.
“The raid was conducted based on credible information about an unauthorised call centre that was duping people on the pretext of setting up telecom towers in the city,” said an officer of the CID.
The unauthorised call centre was allegedly being run under the garb of an office named ‘Shyam Solution’.
“These people at the call centre had been contacting people with lucrative offers convincing them to let out their property for setting up mobile phone towers. The people approached over the phone are offered a large sum for letting out their property and once they agree, they are asked to pay a processing fee,” said an officer.
“Once the ‘processing fee’ was paid, the racketeers would stop taking their calls.”
CID sleuths had received complaints that several Kolkatans had been duped in this way in the past few months, prompting the cops to initiate a case.
Police said they have seized multiple laptops, mobile phones and CPUs from the spot during the raid.
