A first-year student at a women’s polytechnic in Jodhpur Park was found hanging at a hostel in Alipore where she had been staying over the past few months.

A note addressed to her family members was found in her possession, police sources said. The note reportedly mentioned that she wanted to study literature but was pressured to take up engineering. It also reportedly mentioned that her last wish was to get her poems published.

The teenage student from West Midanpore was found hanging from the ceiling fan with a bedsheet on the first floor of the two-storey hostel on Judges Court Road in Alipore around 6.30am on Friday.

She was taken to SSKM Hospital, where she was declared dead.

The body was sent for post-mortem. An unnatural death case has been registered.

The door of the hostel room was locked from inside and had to be broken open, the police said.

An officer at Lalbazar, who was privy to the contents of the note, said it mentioned “pressure of studies” and also her relationship with her family.

The woman has at least two siblings, the police said.

“As her last wish, she said, she wanted her father to publish her poems in the form of a book,” an officer said.

The police said they got an alert from the hostel that a resident was not responding to knocks on the door.

Reaching the spot, the police found the room locked from inside. “There is no foul play involved. Prima facie, it appears to be a case of suicide,” said a senior Kolkata Police officer.

The woman’s family, in West Midnapore, was informed about the death.

"An inquiry has been launched to ascertain whether any pressure forced her to kill herself," the officer said.
