Two groups clashed on Prince Anwar Shah Road, not far from South City Mall in south Kolkata, late on Thursday following a rivalry over supply of construction materials to a site near MR Bangur Hospital.

Police said at least six persons were injured. Six others were arrested in connection with the violence, ransacking a motor parts shop on Prince Anwar Shah Road and damaging a motorcycle parked on the road.

The police said an altercation broke out at a tea stall next to the motor parts shop, at the crossing of Prince Anwar Shah Road and Deshapran Sashmal Road, between members of the two groups.

Soon it snowballed into a fight that spilled on to Prince Anwar Shah Road.

The groups attacked each other with rods, bricks and hockey sticks. During the fight, some vandalised the motor parts shop and damaged the parked motorcycle.

Officers from Golf Green police station went to the spot, followed by forces from Charu Market, Regent Park and Bansdroni police stations.

Multiple police pickets have been set up in the Hoglapara and Burrabagan areas, off Prince Anwar Shah Road, where the men involved in the clash live.

Two cases have been registered — one at Golf Green police station and the other at Charu Market police station.

“Two cases have been started — one for rioting and attempt to murder and the other for attempt to murder and common intention,” said a senior officer.

The police said Arzoo Khan, who was allegedly involved in the clash, suffered head injuries and has received 24 stitches.

Another accused, named Salman Khan, who along with his associates allegedly attacked Arzoo, is being treated at a private hospital off Park Street.

Arzoo has lodged a complaint against Salman.

“Our priority is to ensure that violence does not recur and traffic is not affected on Prince Anwar Shah Road. Raids are being conducted to arrest the remaining accused,” the officer said.

Late on Friday evening, a woman, who owns the ransacked motor parts shop, lodged a complaint of molestation against Arzoo and his associates with Golf Green police station.
