A 22-year-old engineer who told his sister to wait for him for bhai phonta and rode a scooter to a hospital to give his uncle insurance documents was killed after he fell on the Baghajatin flyover and was run over by a private bus on Saturday morning.
Surajit Sur, who completed his engineering course and was looking for a job, was on his way to a private hospital off EM Bypass when the accident took place on the downward slope of the Baghajatin flyover.
A private bus on the Garia-Bagbazar route hit Surajit after the scooter skidded and he was thrown off the two-wheeler. The bus tried to speed away but personnel in a nearby traffic console turned the signal red and forced the driver to stop the vehicle.
Police said the surface where Surajit fell did not have any craters but there was a thin crack. It is not clear whether that had anything to do with the accident, the police said.
“We have asked engineers from the CMDA to scan the area and make immediate repairs so that the cracks are gone,” a police officer said.
The accident took place around 9.05am when Surajit’s sister was making preparations for the bhai phonta rituals back home at Fartabad in Narendrapur.
“His sister had arrived the night before from her in-laws’ place on the occasion of bhai phonta. On Saturday, the family was waiting for Surajit to return,” said a neighbour.
A police officer said that after the bus stopped, “the driver sprang out of his cabin, jumped an iron railing of the flyover and ran away”.
The conductor and the bus were taken to a police station.
Some of the bus passengers, along with the police, lifted Surajit and rushed him to Peerless Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
