The city police have seized Rs 54.32 lakh, allegedly unaccounted for cash, at three locations in central Calcutta.
Senior officers in Calcutta police said officers of the anti-rowdy squad of the detective department had been maintaining vigil on the transportation of cash. “The vigil will increase with the general elections getting closer....While carrying a large amount of money, one should be able to prove the source of the money and the place or person where it is going,” said an officer.
The police said Rs 14.32 lakh was found in the possession of a man named Sourav Singh who was arrested from Burrabazar’s Maharshi Debendra Tagore Road.
A second person named Chandramohan Thakur was arrested from Kali Krishna Tagore Street in Posta with Rs 10 lakh while Rs 30 lakh was seized from Pradip Singha in the Bowbazar area.
None of them could explain the source of the money or where they were taking the amount.
