Over Rs 2.5 lakh has been allegedly stolen from the cash till at 8th Day Cafe Bakery near Park Circus.
Police said CCTV footage shows a man entering the cafe with an umbrella covering his face and then heading straight for the safe where money was kept.
Someone who knew the passcode and had access to the keys to the cafe is suspected as there was no sign of a break-in either at the main entrance or on the safe.
The owners of the 8th Day Cafe Bakery, located on West Range, came to know about the theft on the afternoon of August 23.
“Cash Rs 2.57 lakh was kept in the safe on August 21. The safe has a passcode which is known only to two of our employees. Two other employees have the keys to the cafe. On August 23, when the safe was opened, it was reported to be empty,” said Grant Walsh, who owns the cafe.
The matter was reported to the local Beniapukur police station and a case of theft was initiated on August 26.
A senior officer attached with the probe said the fact that the passcode of the lock and the keys to the cafe were in the possession of a few people makes it apparent that the theft was an “insider job.”
“We are probing the matter and the progress of the case is the subject of investigation,” the officer said.Walsh, who is now in the US, told Metro over the phone that the CCTV footage of the cafe on the morning of August 21 — when the incident happened— shows a man entering the cafe and then heading straight towards the safe.“We have submitted a list of suspects to the police because we have reasons to believe that they could be involved,”Walsh said.
In another footage which has been collected from a building outside the cafe, the man, who still had his face covered with the umbrella, is seen wearing a different colour T-shirt. No one had been arrested till Saturday evening.
Another police officer who is familiar with the investigation into the case said: “We are trying to zero in on the accused from the list of suspects.”
