Sandip who lives in Jharkhand was arrested from Bagnan in Howrah district. He has been remanded in police custody. Sandip claimed in the court that he had been “framed” by Riya’s elder brother Ajay Kumar Rana.

Sandip alleged that he was asked to come to Bagnan by Rana and was arrested once he arrived.

Riya, 30, a YouTuber, was travelling in a car with her husband and two-year-old daughter on Wednesday when she was shot dead on National Highway 16 at Bagnan.

According to Riya’s husband, he had stepped out of the car for a few minutes to urinate when a few men opened fire on his wife and fled in a white car.

He told the police that they were trying to snatch his wallet, which his wife had resisted.

Prakash Kumar’s father, Dhaneswar Ram, on Friday made a counter-claim that Riya’s elder brother himself was responsible for her death.

“Riya’s family never accepted this marriage. This is a clear case of honour killing,” alleged Dhaneswar Ram.

Organs of brain-dead man retrieved

Multiple organs of a 51-year-old brain-dead man were retrieved at a private hospital in the city on Friday.

The man, who was brought from Burdwan to the Medica Superspeciality Hospital, was declared brain dead at 12.53am on Friday.

“We approached the family who agreed to donate the organs. We then contacted the regional organ and tissue transplant organisation (ROTTO) for the organ allocation,” said Amit Ray, the deputy medical director of the hospital.

The man’s kidneys, liver, heart, lungs, and cornea were retrieved by Friday evening.

“We want to raise awareness about organ donation so that more lives can be saved,” said Ray.
