After two days of hard-fought golf at the Royal Calcutta Golf Club (RCGC), it was Ranjit Singh’s brilliant last-round performance that earned him a memorable two-shot win at the third edition of the Bengal Golf Association’s (BGA) West Bengal State Championship and Talent Search.
The competition, jointly sanctioned by the Indian Golf Union (IGU) and BGA, was hosted by India’s oldest golf club between March 31 and April 1 and featured a pool of 115 players. The individual stroke play format was used for the tournament with the 36-hole gross scores of the participants taken into consideration.
In what made for a thrilling finish, Ranjit Singh produced a fantastic final round of one-under 71 to win by two shots, making him the new West Bengal state champion, for both the Amateur and Mid-Amateur divisions. Aryan Roopa Anand finished second in the Amateur category after accumulating a total of 151 across both days. Although Tej Gangavarapu put up a spirited fight, he narrowly missed out on the runner-up position.

Abhishek Mitra finished second in the Mid-Amateur category (36 to 49 years) with a total of 165. Sinjini Mukherjee, the Order of Merit champion of the IGU Eastern India Amateur Golf Feeder Tour last season, took the first position in the Ladies category with a total of 155, followed by Karishma Samadder with a total of 162. Sanjeev Mehra, the Senior category's (50 years and above) hot favourite, won his division with a score of 148, ahead of Sudeep Chitlangia at 155. The renowned golfer and 1982 Asian Games gold medallist, Lakshman Singh, won the Super Senior category (60 years and above) with a score of 166, just one point better than that of Kulvin Suri, who had to settle for second place.
The two days of golfing action at the RCGC marked the completion of the first event of the 2022 edition of the IGU Eastern India Amateur Golf Feeder Tour. The top six amateurs from the Order of Merit will receive an opportunity to qualify for the main tour.
