The sky was wrapped in a blanket of clouds throughout Saturday and the sun hardly made an appearance.

The conditions remained overcast but there was very little rain.

A Met official did not rule out rain later in the night. Sunday was likely to see uniform and widespread rain, he said.

Around 2.30pm, the Kolkata skyline from the Parama flyover looked as if it was 6pm.

The visibility had dipped. Drops of water on the windshields of cars suggested a drizzle but standing outside, one hardly got wet.

The maximum temperature was 29.4 degrees on Saturday, five notches below normal, because of the overcast conditions.

“There is a trough of low pressure extending from Rajasthan to Bihar. There is a cyclonic circulation over Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh,” said G.K. Das, director, India Meteorological Department, Kolkata.

The twin systems are attracting a lot of moisture from the Bay. The clouds that take shape because of the moisture are travelling eastwards, he said.

“The clouds are coming to Kolkata from Jharkhand, via the western districts of Bengal. But till Saturday evening, the movement of the clouds was on the slower side,” said Das.

“There is a chance of rain late on Saturday night. Even if that does not happen, Sunday is likely to be rainy in Kolkata.”

The maximum temperature is likely to dip further on Sunday, he said.
