A low-pressure area has taken shape over the “southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal”, the Met office said on Friday.

“It is likely to intensify into a depression over west-central Bay of Bengal around October 22. It is likely to move initially west-northwestwards till October 22 morning and then gradually recurve north-northeastwards towards Bangladesh coast,” said a Met bulletin on Friday.

“As of now, the possible intensification of this system from a depression to a cyclone is not ruled out. A clearer picture should be available by Sunday,” said G.K. Das, director, IMD, Kolkata.

Under the influence of the system, Kolkata, East Midnapore, South-24 Parganas, North-24 Parganas, Howrah, and Hooghly are likely to get rain from October 23 to 26, the Met bulletin said.

“If the system reaches the western coast of Bangladesh, Sunderbans and adjoining areas, including Kolkata, are likely to get more impacted. But if the system moves towards the eastern coast of Bangladesh, the impact will be insignificant,” Das said.

The sky is likely to be cloudy after October 23.
