Police have summoned for questioning Quazi Sadeque Hossain, the self-proclaimed secretary general of the Asian Human Rights Society, an outfit whose members entered Jadavpur University on Wednesday sporting army-like camouflage gear and claimed they reported to the defence ministry.
Kolkata police have drawn up a suo motu case against the organisation. “He has been asked to appear for a round of questioning... We have several questions for him and the organisation,” said an officer.
The uniformed group wore what looked like army insignia and volunteered to offer security and surveillance at JU.
In the face of questions, its members had said they were linked to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
For a large part of Friday, officers said they tried contacting Hossain but failed.
“We would like to know from Hossain why the members wore army-like fatigues, from where these uniforms were purchased and under whose instructions the members took position at JU claiming to be from the army,” the officer said.
On Friday, JU sent a letter to the police and said the uniformed group that entered the campus were trespassers and urged cops to treat the letter as an FIR.
“We have summoned Hossain on the basis of the case that was registered suo motu and not on the basis of the JU’s letter,” said an officer from Lalbazar.
Fresh charges
The police have slapped fresh charges of preventing officers from entering the JU Main Hostel against Deepsekhar Dutta and Manotosh Ghosh on the night of August 9.
