Vicky Halder, the key suspect in the October 17 twin murders in a Kankulia Road house in south Kolkata's Gariahat area, had met his mother Mithu at Ballygunge station the next morning and handed her a plastic bag containing his blood-stained shirt and other items before disappearing, police said.
Subir Chaki, managing director of Kilburn Engineering Ltd, and his driver Rabin Mondal were found murdered on October 17 night in the house, which was Chaki’s ancestral property.
A week later, Vicky is still absconding.
Mithu and two other alleged partners in crime — Bapi Mondal and Zahir Gazi — are in custody.
Bapi and Zahir, who were allegedly with Vicky in the house when the two were murdered, have apparently told the police that they were unaware of Vicky’s whereabouts and had last seen him while leaving the house.
“We suspect Vicky chose some unknown location in the interiors of South 24-Parganas, possibly along the coastal belt, to take refuge,” an officer said. “His mobile phone has not been switched on since Monday morning.”
Investigators said Vicky has been frequently switching hideouts to avoid suspicion among neighbours.
“We have alerted the coastal police stations in South 24-Parganas about Vicky and have sent them his pictures. We believe he knows his mother has been arrested,” the officer said.
Sleuths suspect Vicky is with the youth who had met him outside a project site on Fern Road on October 17 and the two are trying to sneak into Bangladesh through the porous border in South 24-Parganas.
“Multiple teams of the detective department are working on different leads and scanning call record details of various persons to find out more about Vicky,” an officer said. “We hope to arrest him soon.”
Unless Vicky is traced, it will be difficult for the cops to find the murder weapon. The weapon will be a key evidence in the case.
Mithu had returned home to Diamond Harbour carrying the packet containing the bloodstained shirt without betraying any nervousness, officers said.
“On October 17 night, Vicky returned to his shelter at the Fern Road site,” said the officer. “He spent the night at the site and called up Mithu early next morning and asked her to meet him at Ballygunge station.”
Chaki, who had been planning to sell the Kankulia Road house, lived in New Town with his wife and mother.
He had gone to Kankulia Road on October 17 to meet Vicky, who had posed as a prospective buyer of the house.
