A 42-year-old woman was arrested on Wednesday for alleged involvement in the murder of Subir Chaki, managing director of Kilburn Engineering Ltd, and his driver Rabin Mondal, after it emerged that her son may have killed the two when a robbery plot replaced a plan to buy a house that was too expensive for the suspects.

Mithu Halder, who told the police she works as a domestic help at a teacher’s house in Diamond Harbour, was picked up from Diamond Harbour in South 24-Parganas. Mithu had earlier been arrested on the charge of attempting to kill her husband and was out on bail.

The police are looking for her son Vicky who, along with his associates, is suspected to have killed Chaki, 61, and Mondal, 65, after the top executive recognised him from an earlier meeting, an officer said.

Chaki and Mondal were found dead at Chaki’s Kankulia Road ancestral house near Golpark on Sunday night when they had gone there from the Kilburn MD’s New Town residence to sell the property.

Vicky and his associates had thought Chaki was carrying a lot of cash and they would snatch the amount and other valuables by threatening him with a sharp weapon, the police said.

Mithu was not present at the crime scene but knew about the plan and was somewhere close by, the police added.

An officer of Kolkata police’s detective department said preliminary investigations suggested that Vicky had gone to meet Chaki at his Kankulia Road residence along with a few others on Sunday evening posing as a prospective buyer.

Mithu is learnt to have told the police that Vicky had contacted Chaki recently, responding to an advertisement that the latter had floated inviting buyers for the house.

“Vicky had once visited the house and had left after coming to know that Chaki had quoted a price of nearly Rs 1.5 crore,” said the officer of Kolkata police’s detective department.
