West Bengal State University, Barasat, resumed offline classes on Friday, days after the college and university teachers’ association wrote to vice-chancellor Mahua Das for the resumption of offline classes following a dip in temperature.
The change in weather prompted some of the universities to switch to in-person classes.
A notice signed by the university’s officiating registrar said: “In partial modification to the earlier letter, it may also be noted that the offline classes will resume from May 13”.
Tapan Datta, the officiating registrar, said: “As directed by the competent authority, the notice was issued for resumption of offline classes both at the affiliated colleges and the postgraduate departments”.
Keshab Bhattacharya, the general secretary of the West Bengal College and University Teachers’ Association, said the decision would help those who were struggling to attend online classes because of being on the other side of the digital divide.
“Many students in North 24-Parganas come from underprivileged families and they cannot afford to buy data packs. Continuance of online classes would inconvenience them severely,” said Bhattacharya.
