The body of a 28-year-old nurse of Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute in New Town was found hanging inside her quarters on the hospital campus on Friday morning, police said.
Nitu Singh Gill, who hails from Ghevra in Delhi, was spotted hanging from the ceiling by her roommate, also a nurse, who had stepped out for some work, an officer of the Calcutta Leather Complex police station said.
The police have recovered a purported suicide note where Gill apologised to her parents for her act.
Gill’s roommate, like her, is attached with the cancer wing of the hospital.
According to the officer, Gill had used a dupatta to hang herself from the ceiling fan.
Gill’s roommate found the door ajar after she returned and then saw her hanging. Gill’s bed had been moved closer to the ceiling fan, the police said.
Gill was declared dead at a government-run primary healthcare unit, the police said.
The body bore no external injury marks.
According to Gill’s roommate she seemed disturbed and depressed over the past several weeks.
Her phone will undergo forensic examination, the police said. There has been no complaint from her family till Friday evening.
