Police on Friday sought permission to interrogate Sourav Chowdhury, an accused in the alleged murder of a first-year student at Jadavpur University, inside
jail after the court remanded him in judicial custody till September 8.
The prayer was granted.
Chowdhury, who was named in the FIR lodged by the father of the 17-year-old boy, was the first to be arrested by the police.
He was rounded up on August 11 and had since been in police custody.
Chowdhury was produced in the additional chief judicial magistrate’s court on Friday and remanded him in judicial custody, following which the prosecution submitted a prayer to allow the police to interrogate him inside the jail.
Chowdhury’s lawyer said his client’s phone had been seized but “not much” progress had been made in terms of investigation and gathering evidence against him.
The defence lawyer also submitted that Chowdhury should not be kept with “history sheeters” inside the jail. At this, the public prosecutor said the jail code should be followed regarding the judicial remand of the accused.
Chowdhury, a former student of Jadavpur University who allegedly continued to stay at JU Main Hostel even after completing his postgraduation, has been identified by the police as the alleged “mastermind” of the incident that led to the death of the 17-year-old.
Till now, 12 students and former students have been arrested in connection with the death of the student, who was allegedly thrown off a second-floor balcony of the hostel on the night of August 9.
