New Town's AK Block held its first ever Garba event this Navami.

The dance wasn’t a rehearsed one and participants performed it quite impromptu. “We were so busy with Puja activities that we didn’t have time to practise,” said the dancers.

The event had nearly 10 dancers. Those like Ananya Gupta and Mousumi Mitra were homemakers while those like Anvesha Gupta and Abhishikta Srivastava were students, some as young as 10 years old.

Garba was the highlight of the day’s itinerary and had been placed as the final event of the evening. Both participants and the audience were excited and no sooner did the music begin, than they all started grooving. Songs like Dholida, Chogada, Udi udi jaye and Odhani were played. Eventually, many from the audience joined them.

“Our block has been conducting Puja since 2021 but we decided to introduce garba after some residents, who are familiar with the dance form, moved in,” said Animesh Kumar Paul, secretary of AK Block.
