Nayantara Palchoudhuri has been appointed as the first woman chairperson of the Indian Tea Association (ITA).
Since its inception in 1881, the ITA, an association of tea producers in India, has never had a woman as its chairperson.
The ITA has its headquarters in Kolkata with offices in Binnaguri (Dooars), Bengdubi (Terai), Darjeeling, Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Tezpur and Silchar (Assam).
The ITA congratulated the newly appointed chairperson and other board members on Facebook on Friday. The congratulatory post read: “A big congratulations to ITA’s appointed board members!
Ms Nayantara Palchoudhuri, as our first ever woman Chairperson since ITA’s formation in 1881
Mr Atul Asthana as our Vice-Chairman
Mr Hemant Bangur as our Additional Vice- Chairman.”
The official account of the Norwegian Embassy in New Delhi also congratulated the newly elected chairperson on Facebook.
Palchoudhuri has been Norway’s honorary consul in Kolkata since 2009.
The Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry wrote on Facebook: “We are pleased to announce that Ms. Nayantara Palchoudhuri, Chairperson, North East and North Bengal Committee, The Bengal Chamber is now the first Woman Chairperson of Indian Tea Association since its inception on 1881.”
