Police have arrested three more persons in connection with the assault on assistant commissioner Debjit Chatterjee who fractured an arm after being beaten by a group of men during the BJP’s Nabanna Abhiyan on September 13.

Police identified them as Ganesh Bawlly, Ashim Deb and Shashanka Sarkar — all of who were arrested from Duttapukur in North 24-Parganas.

With the three arrests on Saturday, the total number of people allegedly involved in the cop assault case rose to nine.

The three were produced in court and were remanded in police custody.

A team of Calcutta police officers went to Beldanga in Murshidabad apparently looking for a man named Subhojit Ghosh, 26, for his alleged involvement in the case, the police said. Ghosh’s mother Shantana is a BJP councillor from ward number 13 of Beldanga Municipality.

A five-member team of city police along with two officers from Beldanga police station went to Ghosh’s house but did not find him.

His mother was questioned about his whereabouts, the police said.

An officer said the woman was shown a photograph from the video footage where a man resembling her son was part of the team that was setting the car ablaze. The woman has purportedly denied that it was her son’s photograph, the police said. “My son has nothing to do with all this. He is being framed just because we are BJP members,” she told this newspaper.

“I am not aware of his whereabouts. He has not returned home for the last 15 days,” she said.
