Police commissioner Vineet Goyal said on Friday more people could be arrested in connection with the death of a first-year student of Jadavpur University if their names emerge during the investigation.
“The local police station and the homicide wing (of Kolkata police’s detective department) are carrying out investigations. Most of the people whose involvements were found have been arrested. The investigation is in progress. Information is being collated. We are trying to complete the investigation at the earliest. If the involvement of more people is found, we will arrest them,” Goyal said at the launch of two tableaux on the occasion of Police Day.
“Complaints of ragging are coming through our sources and through the helpline. We are receiving complaints from colleges, too. We are starting cases and doing the needful,” Goyal said.
The police have so far arrested 12 students and former students of JU in connection with the death. The first-year student was allegedly ragged and thrown from a second-floor balcony of JU Main Hostel on the night of August 9.
“No one is above the law. The fact that all the students and former students whose names cropped up during the investigation have been arrested makes it clear that no one will be spared,” said an officer at Lalbazar.
