The monsoon is expected to arrive in Kolkata around June 20, a delay of around 10 days, a Met official said on Wednesday.
There is little chance of immediate relief from the sweltering conditions, he said.
“Conditions are becoming favourable for further advancement of southwest monsoon over some more parts of the southern peninsula and east India and adjoining areas during June 18-21,” said a Met bulletin.
“In Calcutta, the monsoon is expected between June 20 and 21,” said G.K. Das, director, India Meteorological Department, Kolkata.
North Bengal is getting widespread rain. South Bengal, including Kolkata, is reeling under an unyielding sun.
Heat wave conditions prevailed in Bankura and Purulia. In Kolkata, the Met office recorded a maximum temperature of 38.1 degrees Celsius, four notches above normal, on Wednesday.
