A partially cloudy sky and occasional showers have marked the past couple of days in Calcutta.
The coming days are likely to get rain, the Met office has said. But Met officials have ruled out the possibility of heavy rain in the city.
A cyclonic circulation that formed over the Bay of Bengal on Saturday has since moved into land and was over Jharkhand on Monday, said a Met update.
“Another cyclonic circulation is set to take shape over northwest Bay of Bengal in the next 48 hours. Since the northwest Bay is closer to the Odisha coast, the neighbouring states are likely to get widespread rain. Calcutta and adjoining areas are also likely to get light to moderate rainfall. But there is no chance of heavy rain in Calcutta over the next few days,” said G.K. Das, director, India Meteorological Department, Calcutta.
If the circulation intensifies into a low-pressure area, the volume of rain could go up, said a Met official.
Between Saturday night and Monday night, the city received over 30mm of rain, according to the Met office. The maximum temperature on Monday was 32 degrees Celsius, a notch below normal.
Following a sharp spell of rain in the morning, some areas in north and central Calcutta, like Beadon Street and patches of Central Avenue, had ankle-deep water. But the showers stopped and the water receded soon. The city sky was generally cloudy through the day.
“The monsoon trough now passes... through Balasore (in Odisha) and thence southeastwards to east-central Bay of Bengal,” said a Met update.
“The trough is quite far from Calcutta but the new system can pull it closer to the Bengal coast,” said the official.
