A man in his late 30s was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly entering a women’s washroom inside a mall in New Town and filming a woman on his cellphone.
The woman raised the alarm, after which security personnel of Axis Mall rushed in and detained the man, an officer of the Bidhannagar commissionerate said.
She immediately called New Town police station, which sent a team and arrested him, the officer added.
According to another officer, the man, who worked in the mall, entered the toilet and went inside one of the cubicles.
“The complainant was in the adjacent cubicle and raised the alarm after she spotted him filming her on his cellphone. He had stood on the toilet seat and was peeping over the partition when the woman saw him and started shouting,” said the officer.
Hearing her cries, security personnel stationed near the washroom rushed in and caught the man.
The man has been charged under various IPC sections, including 354C (any man who watches, or captures the image of a woman engaging in a private act in circumstances where she would usually have the expectation of not being observed by the perpetrator) and 354 (outraging the modesty of a woman), among others.
He was produced in a court in Barasat and remanded in judicial custody for 14 days.
