“We came to know during investigation that Dulari Bhuniya had succeeded in weaning her husband off his addiction. But he recently relapsed into his old habits. His wife protested on Saturday night, after which a scuffle broke out between the two,” said an officer at Entally police station.

After his arrest, Sanju reportedly admitted to attacking his wife with a glass shard when she tried to stop him from drinking, officers said.

“He said he had used a piece of glass from a photo-frame to attack his wife. That could have killed her,” said the officer.

Bhuniya has been charged under the IPC section on attempt to murder. His wife is under treatment.

The police said the couple had been living at 1 Kapali Tala Lane, near the Calcutta Municipal Corporation's employees' quarters, in Entally for the last eight years.

“Dulari had been running the family with whatever she could save. Her husband was an alcohol addict. He got over his addiction, but started drinking again and that caused tension between the two," said a neighbour.

The neighbour said they were alerted by screams from the house early on Sunday. "We rushed in and found Dulari profusely bleeding," he said.
