Krishna Damani, the administrator and treasurer of South Point School and South Point High School who was arrested for allegedly siphoning off around Rs 10 crore from school funds, was sent to police custody till February 22 on Monday.
Earlier in the day, Damani had moved a writ petition in Calcutta High Court and called his arrest “illegal”.
Justice Jay Sengupta did not hear the case citing personal reasons and sent it to the Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court. The matter was then assigned to the court of Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay, who dismissed the application.
Later on Monday, Damani was produced before the chief metropolitan magistrate by the police as his police remand was only till Monday.
Damani’s defence lawyers submitted a bail prayer.
The prosecution submitted before the court that as Damani was an “influential person” he could allegedly “tamper with evidence” if he was granted bail.
The court rejected his bail prayer and extended his police remand till February 22.
Damani was arrested on February 8. He was charged with criminal breach of trust, forgery, falsification of accounts and criminal conspiracy.
The complaint was lodged on behalf of the MP Birla Group, of which the South Point Education Society (SPES) is a part.
