Several traffic restrictions will be imposed in and around Park Street on Christmas Eve and Christmas evening. Here is what Kolkatans need to know.

Christmas Eve

  • Two-way traffic will be allowed on Park Street and Shakespeare Sarani from 2am on Sunday, instead of 10pm on Saturday
  • Queensway will be one-way, from east to west, as and when required
  • Cathedral Road will be closed to vehicles as and when required

Christmas

  • Park Street, between the Jawaharlal Nehru Road crossing and Wood Street, and Middleton Street will be closed to vehicles on Sunday evening as and when required
  • Ho Chi Minh Sarani will be one-way
  • Two-way traffic will be allowed on Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road between the Royd Street crossing and the Park Street crossing
  • Vehicles will not be allowed on Russell Street
  • Park Street and AJC Bose Road-bound vehicles from Outram Road will move through Ho Chi Minh Sarani, Camac Street, Short Street and Wood Street
  • Park Street-bound vehicles from Mayo Road and Jawaharlal Nehru Road will move through Kyd Street, Free School Street, Royd Street and Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road
  • South-bound vehicles along Jawaharlal Nehru Road intending to go further south from the Park Street crossing will use the Park Street flyover or take a right on Mayo Road and move through Dufferin Road, Outram Road and Kidderpore Road

No parking

  • Parking will not be allowed on Park Street between the Jawaharlal Nehru Road crossing and the Wood Street crossing
  • Parking will not be allowed on Ho Chi Minh Sarani, Camac Street, Middleton Street, Short Street, Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road, Royd Street, Little Russell Street, Free School Street, Kyd Street and Elliot Road
  • Vehicle movement may be regulated at and around the Victoria Memorial, Birla Planetarium, Alipore zoo, Pareshnath Temple, Kali temple in Kalighat, Thanthania Kalibari, New Market sector on Lindsay Street, Birla Mandir on Ashutosh Chowdhury Avenue and Millennium Park

Metro

  • Metro Railway will run 204 trains in the north-south corridor on Christmas. The usual Sunday count is 130 trains. The first trains will leave Kavi Subhas (New Garia) and Dum Dum at 7.50am. The first train will leave Dakshineswar at 8am. The last train will leave Dum Dum at 10.50pm and Dakshineswar at 10.38pm. The last Dum Dum-bound train will leave New Garia at 10.50pm and the last Dakshineswar-bound train will leave New Garia at 10.40pm
  • The East-West Metro will run 44 trains. The first and last trains will leave the terminal stations at 9am and 7.30pm, respectively. Commercial services on the East-West corridor are usually shut on Sundays

Weather

A warm Christmas is in store, a Met official said. The minimum temperature is likely to be around 17 degrees and the maximum around 29 degrees Celsius, he said. A high-pressure zone over the Bay of Bengal is expected to inject moisture into Kolkata, stalling the flow of cold northwesterly winds, he said.

Police arrangements

  • 2,200 police personnel will be on duty in and around Park Street on Christmas Eve
  • 3,000 police personnel will be on Park Street and the adjoining roads on Christmas
  • There will be 11 watchtowers and 16 assistant booths on Park Street on both days

Sound and crackers

  • Crackers can be burst between 11.55pm and 12.30am on Christmas Eve
  • In commercial areas, loudspeakers can be played up to 65db between 6pm and 10pm and 55db between 10pm and 6am. In residential areas, loudspeakers can be played up to 55db between 6pm and 10pm and 45db between 10pm and 6am
