IIEST Shibpur teachers cite ‘lack of democratic space’

More than 90 per cent of the teachers at IIEST who took part in an opinion poll voted in favour of the motion: “A sharp squeezing of democratic academic space is leading to the downfall of IIEST Shibpur”.

Of the 122 teachers who cast their votes, 114 supported the motion.

The opinion poll was held on Friday, coinciding with a 24-hour hunger strike by four teachers to protest the alleged lack of democratic space for teachers on the campus.

The teachers who went to the site of the hunger strike were handed a piece of paper that had written on it the motion with two options — “Agree” and “Disagree”, said Tapendu Mandal, general secretary of the teachers’ association.

Bail rejected
