Channels off air over dispute
Hundreds of thousands of local cable subscribers could not watch many channels for the second consecutive day on Sunday. Most channels of leading broadcasters such as Star, Zee and Sony were taken off air on Saturday, a fallout of a dispute between a section of multi-system operators (MSO) and broadcasters over an imminent hike in charges. The TV screens of many local cable subscribers kept showing a scroll that said that broadcasters might have removed certain channels as cable operators refused to comply with a tariff hike to protect consumer interests.
Sources in the MSO industry in Kolkata said the stalemate could be resolved in a couple of days. A case in this regard is due to come up for hearing in Kerala High Court on Monday. The All India Digital Cable Federation (AIDCF) has moved court against the broadcasters, seeking restoration of the channels. "We are waiting for the hearing. What the court says is expected to determine what happens next," said a senior representative of an MSO.
Meeting
The state agricultural technologists’ service association, under the state government’s agriculture department, held its ninth biennial general meeting on February 18 and 19 at Bidyut Bhawan, Salt Lake. Twelve progressive farmers’ groups selected from districts or zones of Bengal were felicitated as “Krishi Rabi” at the event, one of the organisers said.
