Interim VC appointed for CU
The higher education department on Thursday appointed Asish Kumar Chattopadhyay, pro-vice-chancellor (academic) of Calcutta University, as interim vice-chancellor of the university. Calcutta High Court had set aside the state education department's decision to re-appoint Sonali Chakravarti Banerjee as VC of CU citing that re-appointment "has no legal force and is void in the eyes of the law and non-existent". The Supreme Court upheld that order on October 11. Chattopadhyay has been appointed for a period of three months or till the appointment of a full term VC through a search committee or till he attains the age of 70 years or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
