Restaurateur Prithvish Chakravarti, who owns popular Kolkata brands Calcutta Deli, Calcutta Stories and Tak Heng, has acquired the Hindustan Park eatery, The Mighty Slice. The start-up pizza brand, founded by Sneha Mirchandani and Adhiraj Mukherji, offers classic New York-style giant slices (11 inches, to be precise) along with poutine and several shareable picks.
Chakravarti shares that he plans to scale up, but doesn’t plan on changing the core menu or any of the signature items. “The brand fits in well with our bakery-charcuterie-deli businesses. So, when the owners decided to sell, I was happy to take over. I’m primarily targeting the pizza delivery market. Dine-ins, not so much. I plan to have three-four units running before Puja. Further expansion would also be possible in a franchise model that we are working on,” Chakravarti tells us.
Kolkatans may also spot some of their favourite deli cuts or charcuterie products from Calcutta Deli or Calcutta Stories at TMS’ line-up. “Our charcuterie products will start appearing on TMS pizzas and that is an area of synergy with our existing businesses. We believe that this will add value to the product and excite pizza lovers. We hope to do justice to what Sneha and Adhiraj created,” says the entrepreneur.
The pizza-by-slice serving option has experienced a huge demand in the city, especially in the delivery circuit, where single-serve portions are popular. Chakravarti observes that TMS was a first-mover in this category. “I have always liked the idea that TMS was based on – that is, pizza by the slice. They offer just one slice of pizza — a huge, New York-style 11" slice. It’s just about right for one person. That idea itself makes the brand stand out in the plethora of pizza delivery businesses,” he says.
