The city weather on Saturday turned gloomy and overcast from being bright and sunny for the past several days, signalling the onset of another wet spell.

Many areas received a drizzle or two early in the morning. In some areas, the rain was preceded and followed by lightning.

The emergence of a western disturbance over the northern and northwestern parts of India triggered the change in weather.

“The system is taking shape. Once formed, it will lead to the formation of a trough of low pressure from Bihar to Telangana. The trough and moisture incursion from Bay of Bengal will help in formation of clouds,” said G K Das, director, IMD, Kolkata.

“All districts of south Bengal, including Kolkata, are likely to get rain on Sunday and Monday. Rain is not ruled out in Kolkata on Tuesday as well. The weather will start improving from Wednesday,” said a Met official.

The minimum relative humidity in Kolkata was around 70 per cent on Saturday. The high moisture quotient will mean an increase in the night temperature.

“The night temperature is likely to be in the 17 to 18-degree range for the next few days. But the cloud cover will hide the sun and the day temperature is tipped to be on the lower side,” said the Met official.

Once the system clears and the weather starts improving, the mercury will go south again, he added.
