In-person classes of the undergraduate third-semester students of Jadavpur University’s geology department have been suspended for a week after a student tested positive, said a JU official.
The student informed the department head about having tested positive on Tuesday after which the in-person classes were suspended.
After the campuses reopened for in-person classes on November 16 following a directive from the state government, theory and practical classes of the undergraduate third and postgraduate first semester geology students were being held from Monday to Friday. Several other departments too are holding classes.
JU registrar Snehamanju Basu said: “We will carry out sanitisation of the classroom. The university conducts the exercise on a regular basis across the campus. Decision on suspending the offline classes is the prerogative of the department”.
The infected student is under home quarantine.
A JU official said during the suspension classes will be held over digital platforms. Postgraduate classes of the department will be held as usual.
Since the resumption of in-person classes, Asutosh College, Gokhale Memorial Girls’ College and Bidhannagar College had to suspend classes of the respective semesters after students tested positive.
The standard operating procedure (SOP) that the education department shared with the institutions before the resumption of physical classes, says among other things, as soon a student, teacher or staff tests Covid positive, he/she should be isolated immediately.
“Measures like holding no class, not leaving the rooms for hostelites, if applicable, etc, may be enforced, depending upon the severity of the situation,” the SOP says.
