A Jadavpur University student has lodged a police complaint alleging that her superviser, who teaches at the university, tried to rape her. An officer of Jadavpur police station, where the complaint has been lodged, said a case had been started.

“We will soon submit a prayer for recording the statement of the woman before a magistrate under Section 164 of the CrPC. We are in the process of collecting all the evidence in connection with the case,” the officer said.

The student, who is pursuing MPhil, mentioned in her complaint that the teacher inappropriately touched her in his office and was also “delaying the submission of (her) thesis deliberately”.

The teacher allegedly called the student to his quarters on the campus and again misbehaved with her, following which she lodged the complaint.

When contacted, the student declined to comment. Calls and text messages to the teacher went unanswered.

“The internal complaints committee (ICC) of the university will probe the allegation. The student has been advised to send the complaint to the committee,” as he said.

The student has already mailed a complaint to vice-chancellor Suranjan Das, pro-vice-chancellor Samantak Das and registrar Snemanju Basu.
