Jadavpur University has debarred the professor who stands accused of attempting to rape a student from any activity of his department, “till the inquiry against him is completed”, said a JU official.
The head of the department on Monday issued a notice listing the actions the university has taken following a complaint lodged by an MPhil student against the professor with Jadavpur police station two days ago.
The accused teacher is the complainant’s superviser.
“The professor is debarred from remaining associated with… as directed by the vice-chancellor and further instructed by the dean… because of the unfortunate experience that has happened to the MPhil scholar, her supervisor will be changed and necessary action will be taken so that she can submit her MPhil thesis and apply for her PhD programme,” says the notice signed by the head of the department.
“The professor will not enter any administrative and academic building of Jadavpur University till the inquiry is completed,” the notice says.
The student in her complaint to the police wrote that the teacher had inappropriately touched her in his office and was also “delaying the submission of (her) thesis deliberately”.
She lodged the complaint on Saturday night, after the teacher allegedly called her to his quarters and misbehaved with her.
When contacted, the student declined to comment.
Calls and text messages to the teacher went unanswered.
The university, too, has started an investigation.
“We have submitted a prayer in the Alipore court for recording the statement of the woman before a magistrate under Section 164 of the CrPC. We have also asked the student to send all evidence in connection with the case,” said an officer of Jadavpur police station.
