The Jadavpur University authorities have restricted the speed limit of vehicles on the campus to 15km per hour and have decided to demarcate pedestrian pathways after students with visual impairments alleged that recklessly driven vehicles were posing a challenge to their safety.

A member of the forum for students with disability — a platform of differently-abled students — was injured after he fell while trying to avoid a bike that was allegedly travelling fast on Sunday evening.

JU registrar Snehamanju Basu came up with an order regulating vehicular movement a day after the forum lodged a complaint with the authorities. The order signed by the registrar says: “It is notified for the information of all concerned that for safety and security in the pedestrian movement of all stakeholders with special emphasis on differently-abled individuals, the following steps have been taken with immediate effect.”

The steps are: “Speed limit of 15km/hr within the campus to be followed by all vehicles strictly. All vehicles will enter the campus through gate number 3 and will leave the campus from gate number 4. Gate number 5 will be used for entry of vehicles for entry of residential teachers, scholars, students and staff members of the university”.

Pedestrian pathways will be demarcated on the main thoroughfare from the Pharmaceutical Technology department building to Aurobindo Bhavan.

Suraj Jha, a member of the forum, said though they were happy with the initiative, they want the administration to identify those responsible for the accident on April 9.

A three-member committee has been formed to probe the accident.
