The dean of engineering at Jadavpur University resigned on Wednesday evening, a day after students in the engineering faculty alleged that many teachers were insisting on online classes though the state government had allowed in-person classes.
Atal Chaudhuri, who became interim dean in December, said he sent the resignation letter to VC Suranjan Das. He did not elaborate on the reason for resignation.
Sources said differences between the dean and the university authorities were developing over the past few weeks. “He was not happy with the way the PhD admission procedure was fixed. But the immediate trigger has been the students’ protest,” said a JU official.
JU teachers on Wednesday told the VC classes were not being held for the BTech third-year and fourth-year because students were not coming. “I have requested Chaudhuri to continue till a new dean is appointed,” the VC said.
