The prevailing dry and hot weather is likely to end in some parts of Kolkata as the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts light thunderstorms on Friday afternoon or evening.

Around noon, the IMD predicted, “Rain or thundershower is likely to occur in some areas towards afternoon or evening. Maximum and Minimum temperature are most likely to be around 39˚C and 29 ˚C respectively."

Light rain has also been predicted today and tomorrow for south Bengal, South 24 Parganas, east Midnapore, west Burdwan, Birbhum and Murshidabad. Other places are likely to experience dry weather, states IMD.

However, according to IMD, between April 23 to 24, thunderstorms with lightning and gusty wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph are likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of south Bengal.

Several districts in north Bengal have already received light to moderate rain for two days.

"Due to the formation of cyclonic circulation over central Uttar Pradesh and moisture incursion from Bay of Bengal, the maximum temperature likely to fall by 3-5˚C during next five days and thunderstorms with lightning and gusty wind is likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of West Bengal during April 22 and 25."

IMD predicts the abatement of heatwave conditions in West Bengal from April 22.
