One is aware of biodegradable and non-bio-degradable wastes. But a third category of e-wastes has become more prevalent especially in the last two years. With heavy dependence on electronic devices, the generation of harmful e-wastes has also doubled. Hulladek Recycling, as part of their campaign ‘Freedom from E-waste’, collected almost 7,000 kg of e-wastes in and around Kolkata.
Lending a hand to this campaign were students from various schools and colleges from the city. This campaign not only made the future generation aware of e-wastes and its properties but also formed a basis for their collection and understanding proper disposal methods. Schools which participated included La Martiniere For Boys and Sri Sri Academy; and Basanti Devi College, BT College Barrackpore, Vivekananda College, Narasingha Dutta College, Howrah, Raja Peary Mohan College and Panskura College among others.
“We realise the perils of e-waste and appreciate the initiative taken by Hulladek Recycling to create awareness in this regard,” said Namita Sahu, head of the computer department in Kendriya Vidyalaya.
“We conducted a collection drive for students and faculty members. Proper disposal of e-waste is very important, especially in this digital era and we are glad to be associated with Hulladek for so many years now,” said Indrani Chakraborty, teacher, La Martiniere for Boys, Kolkata.
Hulladek Recycling started its operations in 2015 and gradually became one of the largest e-waste management companies. Nandan Mall, founder, Hulladek Recycling, commented, “As we digitalise, rising electronic waste generation becomes a serious concern. We work actively in creating awareness about e-waste in schools and colleges across Bengal. Our campaign ‘Freedom from e-waste’ was directed towards organizing collection drives in schools and colleges where not only could these institutions dispose of their waste responsibly but students could also drop off their electronic waste. We were happy to have so many schools and colleges participating in this campaign and recycling over 7,000 kg material with us”.
The campaign ran throughout August. Hulladek Recycling is based in Kolkata and has a growing network in 24 cities in 18 states across the country.
